Scotland - Part J of Building Standards
Replacement windows and doors in Scottish dwellings are expected to achieve U values 10% lower than those in England and Wales, which means a difference of 0.2 of a U value compared to England and Wales. Soft coat Low E Glass with a 16mm cavity containing an inert gas will be necessary in most cases.
FENSA Guidance notes
In order to assist its member’s interpret various aspects of the approved documents, FENSA has issued a series of guidance notes. These are the interpretations being used by "FENSA registered companies". This is important because some of the local authorities may interpret some of the building regulations slightly differently. If you are not using a FENSA member and are going to apply to the local authority for permission rather than use a FENSA company you would be well advised to seek clarification before an installation commences.
Building Regulations - England & Wales
All replacement window installations in England & Wales are subject to BUILDING REGULATIONS. This regulation in particular affects the minimum levels of insulation that replacement windows must have when fitted in your home. Levels of insulation are measured as U values. The lower the U value, the better the insulation level.
FENSA
FENSA Limited is the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme for companies that install windows and doors in dwellings. This site supplies information about the Scheme for both installers and the general public.
